Disassembly & Inspection Technician
4-Day Work Week | No Nights | No Weekends | Opportunity to Advance
Do you want a job where you do real, hands-on work—and take pride in earning a living by building something tangible?
Established in 1986, Baril Engine Rebuilding, Inc. has grown to become the Midwest’s foremost custom engine rebuilder and full-service engine machine shop. We have earned our reputation by doing things the right way—through quality workmanship, excellent service, and standing behind our customers.
We are seeking a Disassembly & Inspection Technician, a proven starting point for a long-term career in engine machining and professional engine rebuilding.
This position is ideal for someone with a strong interest in a wide variety of engines and the craftsmanship involved in rebuilding them the right way—from gas and diesel to agricultural, industrial, heavy equipment, and performance applications—who enjoys hands-on mechanical work and understands that meaningful work isn’t always clean—but it is honest, skilled, and rewarding.
This role would be a great fit if you:
- Enjoy hands-on mechanical work and don’t mind getting dirty while working with engine components
- Take pride in accuracy, organization, and craftsmanship
- Want to learn why engines fail and how to rebuild them to like-new condition
- Appreciate structured processes that support consistent, high-quality results
The Reality of the Work Environment
Engines arrive from customers in real-world conditions, often dirty, oily, and heavily used. This role involves regular contact with grease, oil, carbon, and cleaning solutions. Many people who thrive here believe in the idea of “dirty hands, clean money”, earning a good living through honest, skilled trade work done with care and pride.
Why Work at Baril Engine?
- 4-day work week – no nights or weekends
- Competitive pay, strong benefits, and stable long-term employment with advancement opportunities.
- Hands-on exposure to professional engine rebuilding and machining, not general repair work
- Work on a wide variety of engines: diesel, gas, agricultural, industrial, heavy equipment, heavy trucks, antiques, street rods, racing, and pulling applications.
- Learn from experienced machinists and engine builders in a disciplined, process-driven shop.
- Be part of a company that values integrity, teamwork, craftsmanship, and standing behind its work.
Career Growth & Skill Development
This is an entry-level position with a clearly defined development path. Team members typically spend one to two years mastering disassembly and inspection before advancing.
With training, experience, and demonstrated proficiency, this role can lead to advancement into engine machining, including:
- Cylinder head machining (valve seats, guides, surfacing, pressure testing)
- Engine block machining (boring, honing, decking, align honing)
- Crankshaft and rotating assembly preparation
- Precision measurement, tolerances, and quality verification
- Progression toward AERA Cylinder Head Machinist and Engine Machinist certification
- Long-term development into a Certified Master Engine Machinist
Many of our most skilled machinists and engine builders began their careers in this exact position.
People who thrive in this role typically:
- Have a strong curiosity about how engines work internally.
- Enjoy diagnosing problems and understanding root causes.
- Take pride in precision, cleanliness of process, and craftsmanship—even when the work itself is dirty.
- Value earning their living through hands-on, skilled trade work.
- Want a deeper, more technical career within the automotive and diesel industry.
- Have completed—or are currently completing—a two-year technical degree with a strong emphasis on gasoline or diesel engines. (Applicants with this background are strongly preferred, but all candidates will be considered, especially if they have relevant work experience.)
Schedule
- Four 10-hour shifts per week
- No nights or weekends
- Peak seasons may require overtime which may include a fifth weekday – but still no weekends or night shifts.

- Operate and maintain shop equipment, including cleaning equipment, hand and pneumatic tools, impact tools, grinders, buffers, and precision measuring instruments.
- Safely move engines and components using hand carts, overhead cranes, hoists, and forklifts.
- Work professionally and collaboratively with machinists, engine builders, and other team members.
Base Qualifications
- Reliable, accountable, and professional work habits
- Strong work ethic and willingness to follow established processes
- Genuine interest in engines across many applications and the craftsmanship required to rebuild them correctly
